To celebrate the Khmer New Year, there were a few parties to celebrate the employees! I had no idea what these parties would be about, but I was asked by my hubby to bring a nice dress to attend with him. Cool! I wanted to get my hair done because I don’t have tools to do it myself when I travel…I mean, bringing a house along to feed and clothe 3 kids is quite enough, thank you! So I stopped at the first “beauty salon” along the dirt road and had my friend explain what I wanted…then they asked if I wanted my hair washed…SURE…why not? Let’s just say people can be very resourceful when necessary…and these people KNOW how to be resourceful! I always wondered how they did hair without the typical “salon” seat…but I found out. Shampoo is in a squirty water bottle and added to your head for a huge foamy massage…then you are taken to a bed up on a table and a 5 gallon bucket of water is brought in (I learned the next day that it is usually used water and I might have to think about spiders in my hair) and an empty bucket…water is “potted” to your head and the shampoo is rinsed out. Hey, my Alaska girls know what I’m talking about…I sort of felt like I was in a steam with someone else washing my hair!
Zach was NOT happy about any of this…as he knows when routine is broken, something is happening and it usually means Dad & Mom are going O-U-T! He kept telling me my towel was dirty, the girl was hurting me and he didn’t want me to be beautiful. Some of the dealers from the casino came in and chatted with us, so we paid for their hair to be done too…I got a wash, massage and style (which I had to go home and do it over again) and the 2 girls got their hair done for 14,000 riel…aka $3.50. At least when other’s are being resourceful, you too reap the benefits!!!
So I got dressed and waited for Jim to get back from some other event and took the boys to the nanny room. Tears were shed, don’t go was wailed and clawing at the door were a few of my favorites…but 30 minutes later, I realized the party was outside on a gravel pit, so my heels would not be working…I ran in to get my sandals and heard a boy who sounded like Z running around! He had made new friends was playing with Leak and all these boys had been following Jim & I to the party earlier so they were excited to get their picture taken with us!
We decided to have Z join in and he DID…he ran right out to the dance table and danced with Robert & Dada…
Sat down with Mama…
Had a few “cheers” (on a side note, Sheeva jumped up to get Z some water…and Z says, “No kanks. I will have some wine please!”…that is one thing he did not get!)
Asked Auntie Leak to dance with him (we were lucky that she was able to come down and see us a bit after some time with her family away from the city)
…and busted some moves in the circle for everyone to see!
Happy Khmer New Year…and no, I don’t have spiders in my hair.
